I’ve been a fan of protein shakes since high school. You can make them with all sorts of consistencies and flavors, all while packing a whole bunch of protein into a meal.
However, in my college years my go-to whey protein started to hurt my stomach. Fast forward a few more years and I’m so tired of the upset stomachs. I thought I developed some kind of dairy allergy, until I changed protein powders.
And Raw’s Isolate Protein is the solution!
You Get What You Pay For
I’ve shared in the past how I don’t like to spend money. Because of this, when I do spend money, I only want quality items.
So, when it comes to protein powder, the most popular and bang-for-the-buck option from Wal-Mart/Costco doesn’t cut it anymore. You probably know it. Good’ol Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder.

When it’s not on sale, the average price per serving is about $1.25. BUT you can find this stuff on sale throughout the year that drops that price per serving to ~$0.45. That’s wild for protein powder!
Raw’s Isolate Protein averages ~$2.6 per serving. That price is a bit of a gut punch. However, with their 15% off subscription offer, you can bring that average down to ~$2.21. Amazon has it on sale for 9% off right now, bringing in an even better value of ~$2 per serving.
You get what you pay for when you go for the cheapest option, as well as the quality one.
Daily Use

Obviously, the last few weeks have been wonderful not dealing with a sore stomach after my morning toast and protein smoothie.
Being a chocoholic though, Raw’s “Dark Chocolate” protein doesn’t have enough cocoa for me; especially if you put half a banana in your smoothies. Due to this, I highly recommend throwing in a tablespoon of dark cocoa. (Or more if you really like your cocoa!)
Like most supplement brands, Raw recommends you drink your protein drink post-workout, since your muscles should be starved and ready to absorb the most nutrients. That’s simple enough.
But what I want to highlight more than anything else in this article, is to encourage you to try other types of protein powders out there. In today’s age of post-opulence and health-first marketing, find what works best for you.
Don’t wait over a decade to try something else.
There are so many great options today that each have their own approach and problems their solving for. Heck, there are protein powders that claim to support your microbiome and a high percentage of protein per serving.

For me, I want a protein powder that’s made with clean, effective ingredients that doesn’t break the bank. Aka something more affordable than Raw’s Isolate Protein. I don’t know if there’s a better one out there, but it’s better to try than not.
The Recap
This Isolate Protein from Raw has quite literally saved my stomach from future pain. I don’t patiently wait every morning at work for another upset stomach to subside. Making this my new go-to protein powder recommendation, just like the La Sportiva Finale’s are my go-to climbing shoes for intermediate climbers.
But I can’t help but wonder if there’s a more affordable AND gut-friendly protein powder out there. Stay tuned if you would like to learn more or send me a quick email of any recommendations you have.
In the meantime, if you’re also experiencing stomach pain from your protein shake, then try Raw’s Isolate Protein for a couple weeks and see if your gut problems taper off too.
