Wild Alaskan Company: How to Have Family Fish Meal

Wild Alaskan Company unboxing experience

I’m pretty open minded when it comes to seafood. (I’ll try everything once.) However, I don’t like it to taste too fishy AND I want it as fresh as possible.

Whether I’m traveling or trying a new sushi restaurant with my wife, I’m willing to eat new types of fish and dishes. Whether you douse it with lemon or smoke it in butter and brown sugar, there are too many brilliant ways to prepare seafood.

At the end of the day though, I think it’s so special being able to have little food adventures from home with your loved ones. Something that companies like the Wild Alaskan Company make possible.

Fish, Fish, and More Fish

First off, I can’t afford to buy these all the time at $155 per box, but man do I value the nutrition that seafood offers: especially since my wife loves it too!

If you can afford the monthly subscription, and you don’t have a local store that you can buy fresh fish, then Wild Alaskan is hard to beat.

From the packaging to the actual meals you can make, it’s such a wonderful experience.

How so? Because I’m an adult with an overly active inner-child, and there’s dry ice in the packaging. Need I say more?

Plus, it’s really fun to sit down with your spouse or a friend and plan different meals you could make with the salmon, halibut, cod, or pollock.

Sometimes it’s just nice to grill the fish with some salt and pepper, while other times you can go crazy with seasonings, coconut cream, and a lemon. And with all the fish you get in the 12-pack, do something new. Or recreate a dish special to your family.

Frozen Fish?

I’ve been blessed to live in areas of the world where you can get fresh fish everyday with little effort, and the complete opposite. And right now, living 3+ hours away from the ocean, it’s hard to get good, fresh fish.

There’s Wal-Mart, which is hit or miss, and has limited options. But at the end of the day, I have no idea how or where the fish were caught, and… it’s Wal-Mart.

But the Wild Alaskan Company, even though they freeze their fish, everything turns out moist. Nor does the fish fall apart when you cook it like food that’s been in the freezer for too long.

The only thing that you have to be careful and diligent with is the defrosting method.

My first time doing this with some of the sockeye salmon did not go well!

The fridge was too cold, so it took three days for the fish to defrost. By the time they were ready to cook, the salmon turned out dry. My wife still enjoyed it, but I wasn’t satisfied.

I gave it another go, putting the fish on a cookie cooling rack with a bunch of paper towels under them. This works so much better!

The fish were fully defrosted in 48 hours, and thank goodness because we tried four different kinds, each a different way.

This was the highlight! I cooked it all up on a Blackstone for my wife and her parents. Each of us wanted a particular type of fish cooked separately and somehow it all ended up tasting so good!

We couldn’t help but share. It was all moist, soft, and delicious.

And because of the mix of species, we all got to try something new!

The Recap

Because of the Wild Combo Box, my family got to experience halibut, cod, and pollock for the first time. I learned that halibut tastes better than salmon. (Unless you ask my wife!)

And my wife and I enjoyed a special lunch with just her parents. We got to take a break together and catch up, all while sharing a new experience.

Maybe it’s the foodie in me, but I highly recommend trying the Wild Combo box. And enjoy the truly amazing opportunity a healthy, yummy meal can be!
